VECTOR: Asteroids Deluxe sound problems

I have an Asteroids Deluxe completely working except for the sound. It
always seems muffled. I can barely hear the high pitched tone of the ship
shooting. It seems as only the lower frequency sounds are being amplified.
Anybody know what I should look at first?
