This was done about 18 years ago in an electronics enthusiast magazine in great-britain.
i think it was in 'practical electronics' it was a standalone card that connected to a ZX81, it mapped into the memorymap.
the same circuit would be easy to connect to the ISA bus of a pc.
I have the magazine in my storage unit somewere!
if i get a chance this year to tidy the place i will dig it out for everybody!
