(D1 and D2 cards provide either 9 or 18 channels of aquisition.) With the nine channel cards you can run quite fast-- 100MHz sync. For games though usually more channels is better than speed. The Teks have ROM cartridges that are *really* handy-- mnemonic disassembly of 6502, Z-80, 6809, etc. Shows all t-states and whatnot. VERY nice. VERY hard to find the carts though. There's also carts for printer support, novRAM storage of setups etc. Aquisition pods can be hard to find though. On the good side, 1240 and 1241 stuff is interchangeable. (The 1241 is basically a 1240 with a color display and a little different firmware.) The pre-configured "processor" clips are really nice if you can find them-- they plug directly into the Pods and work with the mnemonic carts so you just hook one 40-pin clip to the processor and off you go. It might be hard to find one for $500 though... Maybe a ham-fest or surplus place if you get lucky would have one cheap. Otherwise they're still quite useful so demand keeps the price up at the used equipment shops. We still have a 1240 here at work that's about the only thing the engineers will use. We also have a big snarling-drooling HP 16C550, but it uses a HP PA-RISC UNIX box for the UI and is a little involved to use... (It's impressive though-- cost about half what my house did, 272 channels (or something) with 2Mwords of 40-bit wide trace buffer PER CHANNEL.) If I had one complaint about the 1240 is that the trace buffers are a little shallow-- 512 bytes in general. You can play some tricks with multiple cards though and use the memory on other aquisition cards for deeper buffer. I used my 1241 a lot while working on cracking Pacman Plus and The Glob-- with my configuration (three 18 channel cards and one 9 channel card) I got about 700 instructions in capture memory. Enough for hacking and exploring. I really like the UI for the Tek stuff (smooth scrolling, little "spinner" wheel for whizzing past stuff fast), but some people swear by the HP's... -Clay From Robot2084 Mon Jan 4 19:54:47 1999 Received: from imo23.mx.aol.com (imo23.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.67]) by mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu (8.9.1/8.9.1/mcfeeley.mc-1.24) with ESMTP id TAA29270 for ; Mon, 4 Jan 1999 19:54:46 -0600 (CST) From: Robot2084 Received: from Robot2084 by imo23.mx.aol.com (IMOv18.1) id DFPNa07005 for ; Mon, 4 Jan 1999 20:44:43 +1900 (EST) Message-ID: <27d252c6.36916e8b > Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 20:44:43 EST To: vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: Re: sit-down space war Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Windows 95 sub 62 Reply-To: vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu Sender: owner-vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.2.07 -- ListProc(tm) by CREN In a message dated 99-01-04 20:35:31 EST, you write: << the odd thing is the company name on the lower right of the monitor plex isn't Vectorbeam, and the company was in Los Gatos... other than that, this was the game that I saw. >> Could be that some rigged a similar glass to fit in? It depends on if you own a "Space War", or "Space Wars". And even then it gets shady. Cinematronics manufactured "Space Wars", so if this is what you have, then "normal" would be all Cinematronics stuff. Vectorbeam manufactured "Space War", so if this is what you have, then "normal" would be Vectorbeam stuff. Cinematronics ended up buying Vectorbeam, and with the purchase, they of course, got a wherehouse full of Vectorbeam stuff. Since they really weren't particular about which stuff they stuck in where, it's possible to have Vectorbeam stuff in Cinematronics's "Space Wars" right from the factory. On the other hand if you have anything Cinematronics in a Vectorbeam machine, chances are real good it wasn't manufactured that way, somebody's done some swapping. -Zonn <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< ------ ___ Member of A.A.C.S.: |---- | ( ) Association for Artistically / / ( () ) Challenged Signatures / / //\\ // (__) / ---/ // \\ //\\ // zonn -------| // \\/ From Robot2084 Mon Jan 4 21:14:56 1999 Received: from imo18.mx.aol.com (imo18.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.8]) by mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu (8.9.1/8.9.1/mcfeeley.mc-1.24) with ESMTP id VAA08824 for ; Mon, 4 Jan 1999 21:14:54 -0600 (CST) From: Robot2084 Received: from Robot2084 by imo18.mx.aol.com (IMOv18.1) id 3IOBa20553 for ; Mon, 4 Jan 1999 22:01:02 +1900 (EST) Message-ID: <93c9c81.3691806e > Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 22:01:02 EST To: vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: Re: sit-down space war Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Windows 95 sub 62 Reply-To: vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu Sender: owner-vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.2.07 -- ListProc(tm) by CREN In a message dated 99-01-04 21:32:19 EST, you write: << On the other hand if you have anything Cinematronics in a Vectorbeam machine, chances are real good it wasn't manufactured that way, somebody's done some swapping. >> Well that's what I have....a Cin monitor in my Space War. The 'cocktail' version, an upright version, and Atari's version 'Orbit'. Anyway, the art on it was pretty much the same as Vectorbeams, the board did say vectorbeam on it, and you're right as to it's company name being from Los Gatos - the exact name escapes me at the moment, but it'll come to me. I may even have a picture of it around here. As I know it, there are only about 2 or 3 of them around (maybe 3 or 4 now). I'm gonna get to the bottom of Speed Freak shifter next....it's not often the list gets Vectorbeam on the brain....I better take advantage of it. :) JWC From Robot2084 Tue Jan 5 18:06:38 1999 Received: from imo24.mx.aol.com (imo24.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.68]) by mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu (8.9.1/8.9.1/mcfeeley.mc-1.24) with ESMTP id SAA05524 for ; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 18:06:37 -0600 (CST) From: Robot2084 Received: from Robot2084 by imo24.mx.aol.com (IMOv18.1) id BGCGa03472 for ; Tue, 5 Jan 1999 19:05:43 +1900 (EST) Message-ID: <77f5f154.3692a8d7 > Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 19:05:43 EST To: vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: Speed Freak shifter Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Windows 95 sub 62 Reply-To: vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu Sender: owner-vectorlist@mcfeeley.cc.utexas.edu X-Listprocessor-Version: 8.2.07 -- ListProc(tm) by CREN Ok, roll call for Speed Freak shifter knob. Until recently, I thought the problem was with the CPU board. Then I put in a board that I knew worked. I still got the same results. The board powered up and went out of reset, but then everything was silent. I was getting +5v across the CPU - so I assumed the power supply was OK. After getting no results with a working board, I decided to examine the power supply again. I was getting the +5v for the cpu, but on pins that were supposed to get +25, -25, 6.3VAC, etc - I was not getting good readings. Anybody have any ideas why? The *real* strange thing occured when I unplugged all the connectors and left the power supply on all day. When I got home - I plugged everything back in - and it worked! My roomate suggested that the caps in the power supply may have dried up and that leaving the power supply on all day caused them to "form" - and then work properly. He actually cured a problem on one of his color sun monitors this way. He had left it in storage for a couple of years and some of the capacitors dried up, causing the picture to shrink horizontally in the center. By leaving the monitor on for a couple of days - the picture slowly cured itself back to normal. So - I have an Armor Attack with the same symptoms as the Star Castle and am going to try leaving the power supply on all day just to see what happens. Would anyone care to explain this phenomena? I can't think of any other reason my game would just start working after being dead since the day I got it. (That's the board that connects the Sound board, CPU and AVG) I need a few of them, but the rest I'll offer up for sale. I'm inclined to sell them as PCB only to keep it semi-reasonably priced. The prototype process is two-layer with plated holes which is overkill for something like this, but I doubted I'd ever get around to doing a one-layer only fab-run. Anyway, they should be $14 each for the bare board-- you need to add the edge connectors. You can cut down 100 pin edge connectors (which are easier to find than the 86's) or find some 86 pin connectors. I should have about 7 of them available (which probably isn't enough for everyone, but I didn't want to get too many prototypes in case I messed something up on the SW/ESB boards). Figure $2 extra for a mailer and postage. The vectorlist takes no responsibility for any melted plastic marquees. :) My favorite triclor story is once I had to clean a VCR chassis that was covered in motor oil (don't ask why...) and a gearhead friend suggested using triclor. I sprayed it on and the oil melted away like a springtime snowfall. I ran my finger across the case after the triclor evaporated and it was so clean it squeaked. I set the plastic chassis down and went to work on cleaning the PCBs. Later I went back and noticed the chassis had my fingerprints melted into it (especially where I squaked my finger across it) The triclor substitutes are OK but some seem to be even more plastic unfriendly. About five years ago I met a guy named Bob Hartlieb at a Chicago area hamfest. I noticed he had some Audio Reg 2 PCBs at his booth. I asked about them and he said he used to work at Wells Gardner during the '80s. I was skeptical. Then he mentioned the scrap dealer who had 20 plus Tempest boards. I had seen them earlier and I bought a few of the better ones and a set of manuals. I should have offered $100 for all of them but I didn't know that then. Those were boards he fished out of the scrap pile at WG after he was laid off. His story checked out. Quips about the other vector monitor Atari used (i.e. Amplifone) that should have included a fire extinguisher with every game. I think he even flashed an old WG business card of his. Or maybe it was a card for his porno movie making operation. I didn't quite know how to react when he told me how important it is to have a good bail bonds man in that line of work. :O Then he walked over to a large plywood case and opened the lid. Inside was the guts of a Space Duel. He said they used it at the factory for monitor testing. I forget how much I paid for it, probably $25 or so. I do remember that I had to do some very creative packing to fit it in an Escort wagon. I would have picked up the 25" raster monitor somebody else was selling but I couldn't afford it let alone get it home. I threw it downstairs and buried it under a 32" K8000 picture tube I bought from him at a later date. One day I went looking for the Tempest boards and I thought they might be in the crate. I glanced at the serial number while I cleaned off the dust. #0016 That's probably the closest thing I'll ever have to a religious experience barring any future near death encounters. The board looked like a normal SD aside from the Tempest style pots on the outputs. It did work. A via had opened and one of the deflection signals was getting lost just before the final outputs. I wasn't able to figure that out until later when I finally got a K6100. Recently somebody donated a SD cab to my collection. It was gutted and a wreck aside from the art. Now it looks great aside from some minor scratches on the sideart and a mangy CP overlay. Now the question is... Should I remove the guts of the test jig and put them back into my cab or should I preserve this pseudo jig? Visually its nothing special. SD harness in a big box made of 3/4" plywood with air holes. Historically, this is something else. This jig probably tested many a K6100 (though not too many as the connector is in OK shape). If Atari sent them a complete cab and the WG guys took out the parts to make the jig then it probably has the unique distinction of being the first SD ever to be gutted. :) I tried to get a harness & transformer back from a relative who wanted the parts when I had them but he said he tossed them out after a flood along with three K6100 HV and deflection boards. #^$%&*@ idiot. Would Vidtopia bar me from entering if I put it back in a cab? Would Jess hire a hitman to take me out? Does anybody have a harness & PS for sale? The lower the better (to allow faster drawing without having to use those transistor destroying high voltages). My best bet may be to use that Triad yoke I thought I say in the Wells-Gardner. They contain one of the target CPUs (run at host clock speed), native code in EPROM and a bunch a latches. The only really custom stuff are the thick-film hybrids used for current sensing on CPU signals. Unrelated, if anyone has some time, check out http://www.timestore.com/pages/mhj/mjstuff.htm .
