Anyone watch it or seen it before?

It has a pretty neat (fake... but neat) vector game with speech called
"The Bishop of Battle", which is played by an addicted Emilio Estevez (who
eventually becomes traped in the game). Features the destruction of many
arcade games (by Emilio) in this classic 80's arcade. You see some other
vectors, too. But they don't collapse upon themselves, or trap Emilio
inside them. :)

You are referring to the 1983 film: Nightmares (1983)
Directed by Joseph Sargent. Emilio Estevez stars in one of 4 tales of
bizzaro. His segment deals with a video game that kills (sorta like an
inside-out version of Tron). Also features Moon Unit Zappa. Also a killer
car, a giant rat, and a psycho.

I've never been to these newsgroups, but their name implies something to do 
with the subject - I've also seen the occasional reference to one of them

You may be able to find colored gels at a photography store.  I used to
work in a planetarium and I *think* we got them from a camera shop in
downtown Fort Worth.  I may be mistaken about the source... it's been a
while.  

If you've got a community college in town, try asking their drama
department who they get their gels from.  Or perhaps your local TV
station; some stations still use gels in studio lighting.

A few months ago I bought a Kodak DC290 and since then
I have been working on the basement arcade.  I have updated

Found a Red Baron boardset on the weekend. I haven't tested it yet. I'll
make a harness for my Asteroids and try it later this week.

I was thinking of putting it in a cab as I have some spare XY monitors.

I believe it used an analogue joystick. Now it's been a while since I played
it (20 years) but I don't actually remember the joystick being analogue
adding much value to the game.

I don't remember it being like Road Runner where the Hall Effect stick makes
all the difference, or Sinistar with the 49 way. You can hack either of
these to an 8 position joystick - but it wouldn't paly the same.

What do you think about the Red Baron joystick? Spend the bucks on an
analogue? (Keep in mind it will be in a generic cab... I know of no Red
Baron cabs left in Australia).

"We expected to see some copying at the European shows,"  observed Dr. David
Rockola, executive vice-president of Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corp.  "But we were
surprised when we saw four different copies of Star Castle in 10 different
displays at the ATE show.

"Most of the copies were made by Video Games GmbH of Lich, West Germany, who
was also supplying kits, "Dr. Rockola went on.  "Verbally, I 'persuaded' nine
out of 10 exhibitors to remove the copies from the ATE exhibit floor.  Since
Video Games GmbH was considered the biggest threat, they were officially wanted
to cease and desist.

"However, a week later, Video Games GmbH, informed Nova Apparate, the Rock-Ola
distributor in West Germany, that they felt they could show the machine at the
IMA show on the advice of their attorney," Dr. Rockola continued.  "At this
poin, Rock-Ola obtained an injunction agains Video Games GmbH.  After which
Video Games GmbH filed a protective motion in order to continue showing the
machine.

"However," Dr. Rockola went on, "ater deliberation and review of the protective
motion, the judges granted an injunction in favor of Rock-Ola.  The judges
finding came very close to the end of the IMA show.  In order not to complicate
things, Rock-Ola did not exercise this injuction until after the IMA Show.  Our
attorney has reached an agreement with Video Games to comply and stop any
manufacture and reprogramming of PC boards and they also agreed to damages as
well.

"Based on these finding, " he added, "several other companies who had made
copies agreed to settle out of court with Rock-Ola.  The names of some of the
Star Castle copies were Space Castle, Stellar Castle and Space Fortress amond
others.

I've been playing Red Baron recently and I think that without the analog 
joystick it would be much harder to play.

Where are you located. I am working on an asteroids upright and am looking

I have all the parts that your looking for (for the RED BARON)   I
reciently gutted  mine and have the wire harness, all boards, the
joystick panel, every thing except the cabinate.  So if you still need
anything for your project, I can help you out.

Does anyone have a dedicated Major Havoc manual they could scan ?  

The scan on spies was done with the manual unstapled, so each page ends up
printing half-size. Very hard to read anything usefull.

I think I asked this once before, but figured it was worth another shot.

Yes, If you don't mind Shoot me the measurements of the cabaret gels.

BTW:
   Today the NEW gels arrived, the material is thinner, the red is right on,
a very bright red, as well as the green. The green is actually brighter than
the factory, I kinda like it better, but thats me. I'll be posting a side by
side color shot of old,vs new hopefully sunday. I'll be cutting up two sets
and applying the adhesive to the edges like the factory ones. The only gripe
I can see so far, is that great UPS, even in a heavy tube, they managed to
fold it, thus creasing the gels !!!

I've got a Tempest Cabaret that the marquee is starting to flake on.  So, I'm 
thinking it's time to take it out and at the very least put some sort of 
protective coating on it... and possibly scan it in (in case I need to 
reproduce it - if possible - since the marquees for the cabaret don't seem to 
be as available as the upright).

So, what I'm wondering is:

1) How do I get the thing off without damaging it?
2) What should I use to keep any further flaking from occuring?

1) You'll need to carefully drill out the rivets or push them out from the 
inside of the cabinet (this might damage the wood).
2) I would use a spray clear acrylic paint, but then I'm not the artist in 
the family.  Definitely scan it first.

Hey Guys:

I just picked up a monitor glass and bezel that looks like it could be
from either Red Baron or Tailgunner. The glass has B&W screening on it
with what appears to be a machine gun mount in the lower center, and the
bezel is blue with what looks like propeller swirls. Since Red Baron has
"red" artwork I was thinking it was Tailgunner. Anyone have any
pictures?

Sounds more like Red baron. Tailgunner was in space, and wouldn't have
swirls.

You can compare to the pictures on www.gamearchive.com -- both in the flyer
section and the Atari vector section.

You can pull the scans via ftp here: ftp://148.63.2.209 look in the
/pub/majorhavoc directory.

I scanned the manual in at 8.5"x11" 300 DPI, so each page is around
200-400k, even in JPG format - I don't have the full version or Acrobat to
make it into one simple file, sorry.

Suggestions for resolution/scanning techniques would be appreciated.  I will
scan in the schematics supplement later today.  I'll drop it in
/majorhavoc/schematics when it is ready.

Please let me know if you have trouble accessing the site, I just put it up
a few minutes ago.

Don't use JPEG. 300dpi TIFFs with the highest compression your scanning
progam supports will produce better results on text.

Hi all,

Just wondering-- anyone know of a source/cross/reproduction of the centering 
bellow used in Red Baron's joystick?  I've got one (maybe two) in need of 
replacing.

FWIW, I ened up with Chris' "mutant" Red Baron we saw here a month or so 
back.  It's really curious.  Definately factory-made.  Loks of differences-- 
there are clouds on the monitor surround, and that neat red cowling above 
the controlpanel that blends into the monitor plexi and artwork.  The 
control panel overlay also looks different than the "production" uprights.

It doesn't have any stickers or distinguishing marks on the cabinet, but the 
construction methods are identical to other Atari cabinets.  I think Chris' 
theory is the best-- this is what upright Red Baron's were *supposed* to be 
like, until Atari wound up with too many Battlezone's...

Yes, those bellows work fine for the Red Baron joystick, too.

Does anyone know of a source for those plastic pieces that
couple the potentiometers to the joystick?
Some get worn to the point where the joystick travel is at 50%
before the pot changes.  It responds about as well as a
digital joystick as someone else mentioned recently.

Excellent...  Thanks guys.  I already have a couple of Tom's replacements.  
Maybe I'll replace the ones in my BZ and use the "good" one from BZ in my RB 
instead.

Tom-- you should add Red Baron to your "compatibility" list on the webpage.  
(Since it said Foodfight and Battlezone I didn't figure out RB's the same!  
But then, I can be kinda slow on the uptake sometimes... ;-)

Another Redbaron of Foodfight joystick. :-/  I have a couple cracked ones 
that need replacing.  Someone with a metal brake and router could probably 
make some metal replacements.  Or, a CNC mill and a couple blocks of nylon 
or something. ;-)

My brother in law actually has one of these in his garage (don't ask ;-)  If
the volume numbers are there and someone is willing to draw up the part, can
probably get replacements manufactured at a reasonable price (I was going to
go through him for track ball shaft replacements, but several other people
jumped in)

As always, set up costs are the biggies, so volume would be key to get
prices reasonable.

Ok - the MH schematics are all scanned in, they aren't perfect, but someone
better at image manipulation than I can clean them up if they'd like.

I have them up on my share: ftp://148.63.2.209 - Yes, it is slow because it
is a bi-directional satellite link, but it can now handle 100+ simultaneous
connections. (They only have the link optimized for HTTP right now so FTP
connections are hideously slow, but at least I have *lots* of room on my
local drives...)

I am also pushing the bits up to Chris's share at
ftp://ftp.westnet.com/pub/users/c/chris/ I'm sure Chris will move them to
the arcade share when they are all there.

I am trying to convert the images into TIFF format per Al's suggestion, but
they are winding up to be multimegabyte files when I do so, I'll keep
playing with compression settings and see what I can do.

Hello, everyone.

Just a bit of scanning/image conversion info that I find useful, maybe you
will too.

For those of you who don't have Adobe Acrobat, or for that matter, any
image manipulation software at all, you may want to consider using
ImageMagick.

It's pretty much command line driven, but hey, that's what batch mode
processing is all about :)

You can check it out at
http://www.wizards.dupont.com/cristy/ImageMagick.html.

To do PDF/Postscript conversions, you'll need Ghostscript.  You can get it
at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/.

A small note here.  The Ghostscript main interpreter, gswin32c.exe, must
be in your path for ImageMagick to work right from the command line when
manipulating/converting Postscript/PDF files.  On my machine, it's at
c:\aladdin\gs6.01\bin\.

I use it relatively regularly, and find it to be a pretty valuable tool
when goofing with images.

My two cents, your mileage may vary!

I use LView as my image editor and it can open or save to most common 
formats, it is Win9X compatible, for those of us that don't like esoteric 
command structures...or have a little less time to experiment.

As I followed-up, it looks like arecadegamesupply.com  is Adam Judd, the
guy who was selling lots of stuff on E-Bay under the name krazyaktt.  A lot
of people had problems with him. He's been posting on rgvac over the
weekend, saying he is trying to catch up and make things right.

Yeah, many of the pictures are the same ones Jan/Adam were using on
ebay.

I actually ordered three of the Cinematronics HV supplies, so I'll let
you know when they arrive... ;)  In all fairness, I've received a
working Space Dueal and Tempest boardset (x2) from Jan/Adam. But the

$15 +$3 usps priority shipping. With that you get the red and a green, pre
cut to factory size and the double sided adheasive applied to hold it down
on the edges, just peel and stick to the tube..

I'd like to give away ONE set to someone that can 'evaluate' it for me. The
material is thinner than the factory one, so its a little more fragile, but
other than that, I think I've got it. The free set has a crinkle in it (but
you can't tell in the game), UPS folded the shipping tube it came in....
When I order in bulk, I'll have it sent flat to me instead of rolled.

feedback... First email in gets it... I'm on a work around the house

Yeah. It seems that the general consensus on RGVAC is that arecadegamesupply
  is *not* KrazyKatt (see the "sales /NOT KK" thread 
for example) and that Derek (arecadegamesupply) is getting unfairly painted 
with the KrazyKatt/Adam Judd brush. Derek apparently has been a supplier of 
various parts to KK/AJ in the past which accounts for some of the 
similarities in some of the items they were selling.

I've just finished fixing my first Ampliphone. Thanks to both Dan Todd, for
trading me the Ampliphone in the first place to restore my Major Havoc, and
to Mike Kelly for writing the FAQ without which this probably wouldn't have
happened.

There was one small error in FAQ I wanted to point out. (This is v1.1 from
gamearchive).

It lists the BU406D as Q2 and the MPS U07 as Q3. I think this is backwards.
Both my board (blue from a Star Wars, no serial number unfortunately) and
the schematic on gamearchive list:
Q2 - MPS-U07
Q3 - BU406D

(The board had been badly fried. It had diodes on the bottom, though
scorched to bad it's hard to tell if they were original. Also, though it had
no resistors, it had the holes for them exactly where the Mike suggests
putting them.)

I also wanted to suggest a few additions. For the secion on the Wintron:

 - The wire positions mentioned didn't exacly match my board. The spot for
the green wire, mentioned to be at 9:00 , was more like 11:00 . Slightly
confusing, but the order was still correct.

 - The big black wire isn't mentioned. While this looks obvious,  if your
HV board didn't have a transformer in the first place, it might not be. On
that note . . .

 - A brief mention of the screen/focus assembly might be helpfull, should
someone else acquire a board with all the wires disconnected from it. The
schematic lists it's connections as 1 through 4, but without a way to orient
wich pin is which.

 - Perhaps someone could provide an explination of what the 5w/50ohm
resistors do. I know I'm interested in what these big things I added to the
board actually do. The diodes are someone obvious, but maybe just
mentioning them as clamping diodes for novices would be appropriate.

 - Are the 'brown jumpers' actually just jumpers ? I've never seen one quite
like that. Might they be a fusable link of some kind ?

 - Finally, while Computer Component Source has the BU406D, their e-mail
server looks to be dead. It hasn't responded in weeks. They shiped promptly
when I called the order in. Richardson Electronics does NOT appear to carry
this any longer.

Anyone recognize these numbers K10S or K10A- ? They are on plastic 20 pin 
skinny devices, look like might be a PAL. No other numbers, codes or 
anything (scrubbed off!). I have 5 of the "S" an 4 of the "A-"...These were 
part of a distributors IC stock from the mid 80's

The K10S is one of the custom chips from Scramble.  I'll guess that the K10A
is from one of the other many convertions on the same boardset.
